Corsica autumn visit 3 to 10 October 2019
Corsica is a beautiful island of great contrast and we will experience its dramatic mountains and beautiful coastline & turquoise seas and will explore its recent and ancient history.
The holiday starts in the capital Ajaccio where we will visit Musee Fesch which houses the fine works of art collected by Napoleon’s uncle Cardinal Joseph Fesch and the house where Napoleon was born. From there we travel to a seaside village and the Neolithic archaeological site at Filitosa. On the way to Porto Vecchio we stop at the Medieval hill town of Sartene and the idyllic beach of Plage de la Tonnara. Porto Vecchio is on the east coast and is overlooked by the 16 century citadel. We will lunch at a farmhouse and ramble round the Bronze Age Archaeological site at Casteddu de Tappa. We travel north, and weather permitting, will picnic beside the pools on the River Cavu and on to the Roman villa at Aleria which has a fabulous collection of Greek and Roman artefacts.
Our last stop is Bastia from where we will visit the fortified town of Corte, take the tourist train to the Museum in the ancient citadel and on to a wine tasting. Our farewell dinner will be in Bastia from where we depart.
