The Mayan Civilisation of Central America

Whilst a great deal is known to many about the Greek, Roman and Egyptian civilisations, the great ancient civilisations of the New World (The Maya, the Aztecs and the Incas) are much less well known. This lecture's focus is on the Maya, arguably the greatest of the three.

They achieved remarkably high levels of civilisation in the inhospitable jungles of Central America. Dr Pring will attempt to provide a geographic context, give some details about their time scale and highlight their numerous achievements and the light that shone on their way of life.

Dr Duncan Pring was educated at Oxford (BA, MA) and London (MA, Ph.D) universities. He wrote a PhD thesis on “The Preclassic Ceramics of Northern Belize” and many subsequent articles, mainly on Mayan ceramics. The Protoclassic in the Maya Lowlands was published in 2000 by British Archaeological Reports. His current involvement is with other North American archaeologists pulling together different ceramic sequences in Belize.
